Trial 1 - Messing Around
-
Start the
Sound Grapher. Figure out where the
microphone is that picks up the
sound.
-
Make as many different kinds of
sounds with your voice as you can -- loud
and soft, high and low, different vowels,
mouth open and closed. The sounds need to
be steady so that you can see their pattern.
Observe each sound with the Sound Grapher
and think about how it looks. Use the Pause
button to study each sound.
-
Make a long aaaa sound (as in the
word 'say'). Take a snapshot of the sound.
-
Can you find a repeating pattern in
the sound? What does the pattern look like?
Use words and a drawing to describe the pattern.
-
Now, make a long uuuu sound (as in
the word 'moo'). Take a snapshot of the
sound.
-
Can you find a repeating pattern in
the sound? What does the pattern look like?
Use words and a drawing to describe the pattern.
-
The two sounds you recorded are
shown below. Is there a difference in the
repeating pattern? If so, what is it?
aaaa (as in say) uuuu (as in moo)
-
Try creating another sound with the
shape of simple wave. This is sometimes
called a 'pure' sound. Take a snapshot of
the sound.
-
Now create a 'hissing' sound
(shshshsh). Take a snapshot of the sound.
-
Does the shshsh graph have a
repeating pattern? If so, use words and a
drawing to describe the pattern.
-
Your uuuu and shshshsh sounds are
shown below. How are the pictures different?
uuuu shshsh
-
Try several different sounds, with
your voice, that make different patterns on
the Sound Grapher. The sound should be
steady to get a good picture.
-
Choose one sound that you like. Take
a snaphot of the sound.
-
Describe the sound you made by
thinking of a word that has the sound in it.
-
Make a drawing of the repeating pattern.
