Trial 1 - Make a model of your lung

  1. Obtain a Luer-Lock connector connector. If you do not have one, you can disassemble a Bic 'round stic grip medium' pen to obtain a piece of plastic that functions similarly to the Luer-Lock connector.

  2. Use a rubber band to firmly connect a balloon to this plastic connector. The connection needs to be airtight.

  3. This balloon will represent a lung so label it with the word "lung."

  4. Label the cut soda bottle with the words "chest cavity."

  5. Put the "lung" balloon inside the "chest cavity" and connect the lung to the rubber stopper.

  6. On the bottom of the soda bottle, secure a balloon and label it "diaphragm". This balloon needs to be airtight, so make sure that it is firmly in place.

  7. Connect a pressure sensor to the hole in the rubber stopper that is not connected to the balloon "lung." Refer to Technical Hints for connecting the pressure sensor. Set aside the model.
