Further Investigations

  • Is the light sensor measuring all of the time? To test this, aim it at a light source, like a lamp. Move your hand in front of it. Can you move your hand so fast that the probe doesn't detect it?

  • Try to imitate the way a sensor sees things. Close your eyes. Count to two. Open them for a split second (a quick blink). Close them and count to two again, then open them for a split second. Keep doing this, so that you see just for an instant every two seconds. After you learn how to do this, try it while walking around. Try it while drawing with a pencil. Is it hard? Describe what it's like. If this is the way your eyes worked, could someone sneak up on you?
  • Try to improve your light sensor's ability to find things. Build a detection helper for your light sensor that will make it more able to locate a light source, like a flashlight or a lamp. One option: use heavy paper and aluminum foil and tape. Test it using a light source. Draw a picture of your direction detector. Label the picture to explain how it works.
