Trial 2 - Temperature changes around the room

  1. Imagine that the main reason you want to know what happens to temperature in the classroom is that you want to know whether or not you and your team members will be comfortable if the window is opened. Will you get too cold or too warm? Using your temperature sensor, how might you go about answering this question? Discuss this with your team and write an answer.


  2. Your team can pick one location in the room where you are going to measure air temperature. To mark the location, put a piece of masking tape on the floor below the location. Then write the height of the location on the masking tape.

  3. Use the meter stick to measure the distance from your location to the window.

  4. What is the temperature of your team's location now? Use the temperature sensor to take a measurement of the air while the window is still closed. Refer to Technical Hints to measure a single temperature. Initial Temperature (degrees Celsius):


  5. Open a window just enough (around 1cm) to put the temperature sensor outside and measure the outside temperature. After you have measured the outside temperature, bring the temperature sensor back inside and close the window. Outside Temperature (degrees Celsius):


  6. Calculate the difference between the inside and outside temperature.

  7. Do you think the temperature at your team's location is going to go up, down or stay the same? Put a check in the box that applies and explain your answer.

    Temperature will go up.

    Temperature will go down.

    Temperature will stay the same.


  8. Now check your predictions. Position the temperature sensor at your team's location. As soon as the window is opened, start taking temperatures measurements. Refer to Technical Hints to measure a series of temperature measurements.


  9. What happened to the air temperature at your team's location over the 2 minute time period?


  10. How did your prediction compare with the actual results?


  11. If you left the window open, what do you think would happen over time?


  12. Look at the data of the other teams in your class. Find out whose location had the most temperature change, and whose location had the least. Discuss why and record your thoughts below.
