Trial 1 - Open the Window

  1. Which of the following do you think will be important in figuring out what is going to happen to room temperature when you open the window? Put a check mark in the box for each of the following:

    Important or Not as Important

    The temperature outside

    Important

    Not as important

    The temperature inside

    Important

    Not as important

    The size of the room

    Important

    Not as important

    How open the window is

    Important

    Not as important

Whether or not it is breezy outside

    Important

    Not as important

Whether or not it is sunny or rainy outside

    Important

    Not as important

The length of time the window is open

    Important

    Not as important

The location in the room where you are measuring temperature

    Important

    Not as important

  2. In Investigation I you mixed cups of water. Did mixing cups of water help you in deciding what was important? Yes or No. Explain your answer.

  3. Use the temperature sensor to find out what the temperature is in the room now. Refer to Technical Hints to connect the temperature sensor. Use the meter stick and the temperature sensor to measure the air temperature one meter from the window. The sensor should be at the same height as the window. Remember this location, because you are going to measure temperature again in this same location.

    Initial Room Temperature:

  4. What is the outside temperature? Open a window just enough (around 1 cm) to put the temperature sensor outside. Measure the outside temperature. Refer to Technical Hints to measure a single temperature. Bring the temperature sensor back inside and close the window.

    Outside Temperature:

  5. Knowing the current inside and outside temperature, what do you think is going to happen to the temperature when you open the window all the way? Make a prediction of what the temperature sensor will read for the first 2 minutes. Refer to Technical Hints to use the Graph Sketcher.

  6. Prepare to open the window and start collecting data. The temperature sensor should be positioned 1 meter away from the window, in the same location you used earlier. As soon as the window is opened, begin collecting temperature data. Continue to collect data for 2 minutes. Refer to Technical Hints to measure a series of temperature measurements. It may be helpful to have one team member open the window, and another team member begin the data collection.

  7. How did your prediction compare to the actual temperature values you recorded?

  8. Did the temperature measured by the temperature sensor change over time? Why or why not?

  9. Do you think the temperature in the room will change the same way no matter where you are in the room? Why or why not?

    Yes

    No
