Trial 2 - Making Predictions

  1. Using the graph sketching tool, draw a distance-time graph that shows someone walking forward and backwards over a 4 meter track in a 60 second period of time. Refer to Technical Hints to use the graph sketcher. Label your graph to show forward (f) motion and backward (b) motion.

  2. Does your prediction show a change in speed? Explain the motion in words.

  3. Using the graph sketching tool, draw a distance-time graph that shows someone walking quickly forwards for the first half of the track and then slowly for the second half. The elapsed time of the total motion should be 60 seconds. Refer to Technical Hints to use the graph sketcher. Label your graph to show when you will walk quickly (q) and when you walk slowly (s).

  4. Using the graph sketching tool, draw a distance - time graph that shows someone walking forwards for 20 seconds, stopping for 20 seconds, and continuing forwards for another 20 seconds on a 4 meter track. Refer to Technical Hints to use the graph sketcher. Label your graph to show forward (f) motion and no (n) motion.

  5. Explain your prediction in words. Be sure to explain if there was a change in velocity. If so, describe the change in velocity in writing.

  6. Using the graph sketching tool, draw a distance-time graph that shows someone starting to walk backwards 2 meters down the 4 meter track instead of at the beginning. After 10 seconds they stop 1 meter from the start of the track for 40 seconds, then walk back to the 2 meter mark in the last ten seconds. The elapsed time of the total motion should be 60 seconds. Refer to Technical Hints to use the graph sketcher. Label the starting position in meters on your graph.

  7. What was the speed in the first ten seconds?

  8. What was the speed in the last ten seconds?

  9. Why is one of the speeds negative and the other positive?
